What is the Best Time to Replace a Roof?

Best Time to Get a New Roof

The best seasons to get a new roof are when there is a bit of sun and clear skies. Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of each season.

Spring

This is typically the perfect time to replace your roof because the weather is not too cold or hot. Spring is also a relatively slow time for many roofing companies, meaning you may be able to get a better deal. However, you might want to think about this if the weather in your area is too unpredictable, since long periods of rain could prolong the timeframe of your project.

Summer

Early summer – before it gets too hot and humid – can be an excellent time for roofing work, since the conditions are consistent, and the materials stay at a comfortable temperature.

However, many people work on their homes in the summer, so contractors can be busy, which means the prices can increase. If you want to get a roof replacement in the summer, make sure to schedule it in advance.

Fall

The fall season is probably the best time for a new roof. Not only is the weather colder, but it is also more consistent and stable. Getting a new roof during the autumn also allows you time to prepare for the winter season. Roofers are also usually able to work a bit longer during the day, which means they will get the work done quicker than in other seasons.

Since this is definitely the best time to get a new roof, many homeowners are replacing their roofs, meaning you have a lot of competition for contractor time. With the high demand, prices also tend to be higher during this period.

Winter

Winter can be a difficult time for roof replacements, so if you need a sudden roof replacement, you need to try to plan ahead.

Replacing a roof can become problematic, with temperatures that are below 40°F. In order to set, shingles need thermal sealing, and this could take days or weeks in colder seasons. Also, if shingles get too cold, they can break or crack during your install. Plus, sleet, snow, and other winter weather can make it very unsafe for workers to perform an install.

The good news is, it is not impossible to replace your roof in the winter if your contractor knows what they’re doing, and their schedule is accommodating to any weather condition. Another benefit to the winter season is that there’s less work that contractors are able to book, which means you may get a good deal.

A good contractor can guarantee the quality of their work no matter the weather, so getting a new roof in the winter could be a good option for you.

Keep in mind that late summer and early fall are extremely busy times of the year for contractors, which means they will raise their prices. If you want to get a replacement for less money, you should schedule your roof to be replaced before or after this time.
