What Drives Window Replacement Cost

what drives replacement window cost?

There are multiple things to consider when choosing replacement windows, but it seems that the price remains the most significant factor. Homeowners experience an unpleasant surprise when they find out that, on average, the replacement costs $300-$700 per window.

Windows replacement has numerous benefits, which can save you money on energy and heating long term. If you choose quality windows and hire a professional to install them, they can stay functional for a very long time. It’s important to understand what affects the window replacement cost to consider how much you will have to invest.

Window Types

Generally, windows are categorized by how their frames operate. It has an important effect on the price as the size and functionality of various windows makes them more difficult to produce and install. When choosing replacement windows for your house, take these commonly used varieties into consideration:

  • Single-hung windows (on average $175-$350 per window). On these windows, the bottom sash moves up to open and allow in airflow and the top sash remains fixed.
  • Double-hung windows (on average $300-$800 per window). This type of vinyl replacement windows has two sashes that move and can be both raised from the bottom and lowered from the top.
  • Sliding windows (on average $325-$800 per window). These windows are horizontal with sashes that can independently slide from side to side.
  • Casement windows (on average $275-$750 per window). This type of windows are attached to one side of the frame with a hinge and can be opened by swinging the sash out from the window.

Window Materials

When replacing windows, the price usually increases proportionally to how many panes of glass the new window has. Generally, windows have either two (double glazing) or three (triple glazing) insulating glass panes. Triple-glazed windows are more expensive, but also more cost-effective since they save energy.

However, if you need to replace the window frame as well, it raises the cost significantly as you are paying for new construction windows. The type of window frame materials is usually vinyl, wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. Vinyl windows are typically considered the best option since they are more affordable, require less maintenance than wood and aluminum, and are easier to install than fiberglass.

Number of Windows

When replacing windows, it is common to replace all of them at once. Naturally, window replacement costs are calculated according to the price per window multiplied by the number of windows on your house. Here’s an example: an average three-bedroom single-story house has between ten and twelve windows. If you want to replace all of them, it can cost from $3600 to $8400, on average.

However, if you have to replace both the window and the frame (a whole new construction window), the price can increase by 50% to 100% and can even reach $40,000 for the entire house. So, it’s crucial that you consult a professional for an on-site estimate before you even begin this process.
