Tips for Keeping Vinyl Siding Looking New

tips for keeping siding looking new

Siding is a rather significant investment; therefore, you want to ensure it lasts a long time and not need to be replaced before the guaranteed lifespan. And because the siding is a visible aspect of your home, you want to keep it looking new for a long time.

Many things cause your home’s siding to look old and weathered. Over time, dirt and grime can build up, turning your siding green. Dust and dirt can collect leading to discoloration. Bird and bug waste can also leave ugly stains. And if your home happens to be in a shady area that is damp, it will be prone to mold and mildew. Not only do all these make your siding look less than new, but it makes your home appear unkempt.

Most vinyl siding manufacturers will tell you that minimal cleaning is required, and this is true. Vinyl siding is low-maintenance; however, it still takes some effort on your part to keep it looking like new. While vinyl does offer protection against mold and mildew, it can happen. It is easier to clean vinyl siding compared to other types. Here’s what you can do:

Stick to a Schedule

Pressure washing your siding once a year is typically enough for most homes. However, it’s best to have a professional do it as pressure washers can cause uneven streaks; it may even lead to the caulking loosening or removed entirely; leading to leaks. Also, you should also check with the manufacturer of your vinyl siding if they recommend power washing at all as all vinyl sidings are not compatible with pressure washing.

Your cleaning schedule should also depend on where you live and how many trees there are on your property. Weather plays a big part on the state of your siding. While vinyl siding can withstand incredibly strong winds and intense summer heat, the dirt that sticks to it should still be removed so that it doesn’t accumulate. While the dirt may not cause any damage, it is still an eye-sore.

Pay Attention

Every so often, take a step outside and inspect your home from a distance. Accidents happen, and you could end up with cracks, breaks, or pieces of siding that have come loose. If you’re not paying attention and leave them unchecked, bugs could crawl into these open spaces and make things worse. Moisture can also build inside them and lead to mold growth.

Hold the Bleach

1-800-HANSONS uses premium materials for their vinyl siding. It’s not necessary to use concentrated doses of bleach which can strip away siding surfaces regardless of their material. When it comes to cleaning your siding, all you need is an all-natural water-vinegar cleaning solution. Vinegar is excellent for killing mold and mildew. All it takes a simple scrub down followed by rinsing away the solution. You can also use your favorite powder detergent mixed with water.
