How Much Does Siding Installation Cost?

vinyl siding prices

Looking to do a siding replacement to your home is an important, yet daunting task. There are several things that need to be taken into consideration, one of them being the cost. Getting a siding quote isn’t easy either. You will have to go through many consultations with different contractors before you can make an informed decision. That said, how much does siding cost? This information will give you a rough estimate so that you will be better informed in the future.

In general, the average American homeowner will pay anywhere in between $5,000 and $25,000 to install siding on their home’s exterior. Depending on several factors, having vinyl siding installed will cost between $5.00 and $16.00 per square foot, whereas fiber cement can reach as much as $24.

Factors that influence the price of siding

So, how much does siding cost? As we said, there are several factors that go into the final cost of installing siding. While the figures mentioned above will give you an estimate, you should also take into account the following figures.

Siding material

The type of material you choose to use will be the biggest influencer in terms of the final price. These types of materials are:

  • Vinyl – Vinyl siding is among the most popular and widespread across the country. Over a third of American homeowners choose vinyl for their siding. Its price will also vary from $650 to $1400 per 100 square feet, which also includes the installation costs.
  • Wood – Wood siding, on the other hand, is a more traditional choice that costs around $700 or above. The issue with wood siding, however, is that it requires a lot of maintenance. This will add to the overall cost over time.
  • Fiber Cement – This type of siding is typically the most expensive, averaging between $1400 and $1800 per 100 square feet.
  • Aluminum – This is the most affordable option with a typical price of around $500 per 100 square feet.

Different siding styles

You will typically be able to customize the texture, style, and color of the siding you want. Yet, some of these customizations can and will increase the price of the final product. You should, therefore, keep in mind this factor when calculating the cost of your project.

Disadvantages of insulated vinyl siding

The main disadvantage of insulated vinyl is its relatively high price. Adding insulation can raise the cost of the siding by 20% to 50%. The procedure is similar to a standard vinyl installation, so the labor costs shouldn’t be much higher with insulated vinyl.

However, it’s important to choose a contractor who is experienced with such siding. The benefits of insulated vinyl depend on the precision of installation in order to eliminate holes in the insulation backing. Added thermal performance, along with the improved appearance and overall feel are examples of a few benefits. Improper installation can hurt the insulation value and the overall look of the final product.

Insulated vinyl siding that isn’t installed properly may eliminate any of the benefits. If you’re going to spend the money, make sure that it looks its best and is fully functional.

Your home’s size and location

It should go without saying that the size and layout of your home will impact the total square footage and, by extension, the price. The location of your home will also play an important role in the final costs. For instance, the average pricing for siding installation in New York is around $12,000, while in Cleveland, it’s closer to $8,000.

Extra costs

Aside from the aforementioned factors, there can be some additional costs that can impact the final price of your siding project. Say, for instance, you’re also having a trim installed, which can add several hundred to several thousand dollars extra. The same thing can also be said if you need to strip already-existing siding before replacement. This can add a further 5 or 10 dollars per 100 square feet. Additionally, you may also want to replace your gutters, add gutter guards, install new shutters, all of which may add some further expenses.

Understanding all the factors that go into the final price will help you make a more informed decision and help you adjust your budget. Vinyl siding doesn’t only have an aesthetic role for your home, but it also keeps any rough weather out.
