Energy Saving Tips For Your Home

energy saving tips for your home

Opting for anything but energy efficient solutions has become almost nonsensical in the 21st century. There is much to benefit from choosing green solutions in our everyday life.

Not only can you drastically cut down on your expenses (we’re talking about saving hundreds of dollars annually on bills,) but it’s good for the environment and it also significantly increases the quality of life. And what better place to start than in your own home, right?

Being energy efficient means finding solutions that do the same job but use less energy; becoming energy efficient can be done in various smart ways that don’t necessarily require too much time or money. Check out some of the options:

Lighting

The power we use to light our homes is about 10% of our monthly bills. Using as much natural light (south-facing windows give the most light) and switching off unnecessary bulbs in your home will cut down costs, but what else can you do? Switch to LED. LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last longer than regular incandescent ones. They also release much less heat than incandescent bulbs, which only consume about 10% of electricity to produce light and turn the rest into heat.

Appliances

When it comes to devices, there are a lot of different tricks, so we’ll try to cover the most common ones. First things first: switch off or unplug appliances and chargers that aren’t being used. Try using your microwave or toaster rather than your grill to warm up your food, as they use less energy and don’t release excess heat.

Wash your clothes on a slightly cooler temperature, and air dry when possible. Switch off anything that you don’t need, like your computer or air conditioner, especially while you’re not home. See? Easy! Plus, some of these things you may be doing already without even realizing they are energy efficient!

Water

The price of water is on the rise, and the average family consumes about 300 gallons of water per day. Therefore, it’s a good idea to adopt the habit of switching off the water while going through basic routines like washing teeth, hands, shaving, etc. One other great way to do this is to have shorter showers, because not only does it save water, it also saves energy as hot water is costly to produce.

Insulation

Heating and cooling costs can be significantly reduced with proper insulation. Most households will lose about 20% of their heated or cooled air due to improper insulation, so to avoid wasting energy, it’s a good idea to invest in your home to make sure every part of the house works together (the roof, attic, basement, windows, walls, etc.) to lower your utility bills in the long run.

There are so many different ways to improve the way energy is saved within your own home, from a simple change of habit to home improvements!
